Embrace Winter!
I have to be honest, when I lived in Calgary, Alberta and was first introduced to the idea of a snow picnic, I was sure my friends were stark raving mad. I thought, “Why, for the love of Pete, would I want to sit outside in sub-zero temperatures and have a picnic?” I was sure Old Man Winter had blown icicles in their ears and frozen their thinking mechanisms—little did I know that it was my brain that was frozen! Once I tried one, it was instant love!!! After all, I had a whole new landscape I could redecorate :). I’ve since learned to embrace winter and a good snow picnic at every opportunity I get.
What I discovered was that when you live in a climate where Winter happens for 6-9 months of the year, you need to learn to embrace it or you’ll end up sitting indoors on your duff and missing what are some of the most spectacular moments and scenery this magical season has to offer.
Think I’m crazy? I bet if you try it, you’ll be hooked. The secret is to not skimp on all the little luxuries that make this event so special. It may take a little planning and a carload of accessories (which I have been known to pack!), but including items such as cozy fur wraps (faux or real), exotic goodies to nibble on, and even candles and flowers for the table are what elevate this event beyond a rest-stop like experience! If you are somewhere that allows for a fire, bring wood and light one to make things even cozier. How about the makings of hot chocolate and s’mores? The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.
What if you’re not the packing type? Well, just set up right outside your back door like I did and you can haul all kinds of food and décor outdoors to create your snow picnic scene…while still enjoying access to indoor plumbing!
So this year, instead of hunkering down in your bunker, why not head outside and embrace winter? When you do, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with how much fun this can be. And if you do, I’d love to see your pictures! Or do y’all think I’m crazy still?
Happy Winter Y’all!

Awesome idea!!!….now only if it would snow here :( we haven’t had a snow in two years. Booooo
No snow in TWO YEARS! Unheard of up here in the great white north!
Love it all! Especially the Canadian Butter Box! Your picnic is more elegant than my living room :)
Haha! I have been known to be a bit of a drama queen about this stuff Brandy ;)
I think the 4 bottles of wine are enough to keep anyone cozy! ;) when Matt and I are back in the ‘hood sometime, we should a do this!
Haha! Absolutely Kate…and maybe this would change Matt’s mind about snow!
Oh, speak it sister!
I love those green flowers, too.
:))) Thanks Cheyenne!
What a cool idea! I’d have never thought.
Elle-Bo are you serious? But you’re from Alberta?!!! It’s the perfect way to take advantage of a Chinook…head on out to K-Country and find a frozen lake to light a fire beside and picnic on girl!
